Stanching bleeding

止血 〔止血〕zhǐ xuè

Also containing bleeding. Any of various methods of treatment used to address bleeding. Different medicinals are used depending on whether it occurs in cold or heat patterns.

Medicinal therapy: Blood-stanching medicinals are selected for their cool or warm nature.

Agents are also chosen according to the location of the bleeding.

Blood-stanching medicinals with a pronounced securing-astringent effect include arborvitae leaf (Platycladi Cacumen, 侧柏叶 cè bǎi yè), trachycarpus (Trachycarpi Petiolus, 棕榈皮 zōng lǘ pí), lotus leaf (Nelumbinis Folium, 荷叶 hé yè), bletilla (Bletillae Rhizoma, 白及 bái jí), and oven earth (Terra Flava Usta, 伏龙肝 fú lóng gān).

Charring (char-frying, or blast-frying) is frequently used to increase the astringent and blood-stanching effect of other medicinals. A representative blood-stanching formula is Ten Cinders Pill (十灰丸 shí huī wán).

Acumoxatherapy: Points are chosen according to the pattern:

See clearing heat and stanching bleeding; supplementing qì and stanching bleeding; dispelling stasis and stanching bleeding; flooding and spotting; bloody urine; blood ejection.
