Also blood in the urine. The presence of liquid blood or blood clots in the urine, without any pronounced discomfort.
Biomedical correspondence: hematuria.
Bloody urine is distinguished from blood strangury by the absence of pain on urination. It is also distinct from reddish urine, which is urine darker in color than normal. Bloody urine is usually attributed to insufficiency of kidney yīn with effulgent heart-liver fire spreading to the small intestine or to dual depletion of the spleen and kidney preventing the blood from being contained.
Patterns
Effulgent yīn vacuity fire (阴虚火旺 yīn xū huǒ wàng) patterns are marked by red urine or passing of pure blood attended by limp aching lumbus and legs, tinnitus and flowery vision, vexation and dry mouth, red tongue, and a fine rapid pulse.
Medicinal therapy: Enrich yīn and clear fire; cool the blood and stanch bleeding. Use with formulas such as Ass Hide Glue Powder (阿胶散ē jiāo sǎn), Red-Abducting Powder (导赤散dǎo chì sǎn), Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill (知柏地黄丸zhī bǎi dì huáng wán) combined with Field Thistle Drink (小蓟饮子xiǎo jì yǐn zi).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on back transport points, HT, and the three yīn channels of the foot; select BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), KI-10 (Yīn Valley, 阴谷 yīn gǔ), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), LR-1 (Large Pile, 大敦 dà dūn), HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén); needle with even supplementation and drainage.
Dual depletion of the spleen and kidney (脾肾两亏 pí shèn liǎng kuī) gives rise to pale red urine, withered-yellow facial complexion, reduced food intake, aching lumbus and cold limbs, pale tongue, and a soft vacuous pulse.
Medicinal therapy: Fortify the spleen and supplement the kidney; boost qì and contain the blood. Use Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction (补中益气汤bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng) or Matchless Dioscorea Pill (无比山药丸wú bǐ shān yào wán).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on the back transport points, BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù), BL-27 (Small Intestine Transport, 小肠俞 xiǎo cháng shù), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi); needle with supplementation.
