Ingredients:

• Xiǎo jì (小蓟 Cirsii Herba, field thistle) 15–30g
• Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 15–30g
• Huá shí (滑石 Talcum , talcum) 9–15g
• Mù tōng (木通 Akebiae Trifoliatae Caulis, trifoliate akebia) 3–6g
• Dàn zhú yè (淡竹叶 Lophatheri Herba, lophatherum) 6–9g
• ǒu jié (藕节 Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Nodus, lotus root node) 9–15g
• Pú huáng (蒲黄 Typhae Pollen, typha pollen) (stir–fried) 9–12g
• Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–9g
• Shān zhī (山栀 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 6–9g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 3–6g

Action: Cools the blood and stanches bleeding; disinhibits water and frees strangury.

Indication: Lower burner heat bind, blood strangury, bloody urine, frequent urination, and pain in the urethra. Tongue: Red. Pulse: Rapid.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: 大蓟, ǒu jié, Pú huáng, and Shēng dì huáng cool the blood and stanch bleeding. The first three of these stanch bleeding without allowing blood stasis to develop. Mù tōng and Dàn zhú yè disinhibit water and free strangury, so as to drain heat out of the body. Zhī zǐ clears heart fire and carries the heat downward. Shēng dì huáng nourishes yīn and prevents the water-disinhibiting action of Mù tōng from damaging yīn. Dāng guī combined with Shēng dì huáng nourishes and harmonizes the blood and helps the 大蓟 to transform stasis. Gān cǎo relieves tension and pain. Thus, the overall formula on the one hand cools the blood, stanches bleeding, while transforming stasis and on the other disinhibits water and frees strangury while nourishing yīn.

Variations:

• Severe bloody urine: Add Bái máo gēn (白茅根 Imperatae Rhizoma, imperata [rhizome]) and Xiān hè cǎo (仙鹤草 Agrimoniae Herba, agrimony).
• Blood strangury with acute pain in the urethra: Add Hǔ pò (琥珀 Succinum , amber) and Hǎi jīn shā (海金沙 Lygodii Spora, lygodium spore).
• Rough voidings of hot reddish urine: Add Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) and Shí wéi (石韦 Pyrrosiae Folium, pyrrosia [leaf]).
