Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction
补中益气汤 〔補中益氣湯〕bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng

Ingredients:
- Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]) 15g
- Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) (or Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root])) 3g
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 12g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 3g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9g
- Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 6g
- Shēng má (升麻 Cimicifugae Rhizoma, cimicifuga [root]) 3g
- Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) 3g
- Dà zǎo (大枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 6g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 6g
Action: Boosts qì and upbears yáng; regulates and supplements the stomach and spleen.
Indication: Insufficiency of spleen, stomach and center qì with reduced food intake, fatigue, spontaneous sweating sometimes with heat effusion, and a forceless large, vacuous pulse. It is suitable for: dizziness due to failure of clear yáng to bear upward; prolapse of the internal organs; enduring diarrhea with prolapse of the rectum; yīn protrusion (prolapse of the uterus); enuresis; unctuous strangury; flooding and spotting due to

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Huáng qí supplements and upbears qì. Rén shēn, which can be replaced with Dǎng shēn, Bái zhú, and Gān cǎo are warm sweet agents that fortify the spleen and harmonize the stomach, helping the Huáng qí supplement qì. Shēng má and Chái hú are of light qì and weak flavor; assisting the qì-upbearing action of Huáng qí, they help center qì to rise. Dāng guī nourishes the blood, thereby underpinning qì (blood is the mother of qì). Chén pí, Shēng jiāng, and Dà zǎo to rectify qì and harmonize the stomach, thereby addressing the qì stagnation that often arises in qì vacuity. When fallen qì is lifted, the prolapse naturally disappears.
Variations:

Common cold in people suffering from vacuity: Add Zǐ sū yè (紫苏叶 Perillae Folium, perilla leaf).- Mild concussion: Add Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]), Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel), and Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]).
- Auditory vertigo: Add Yuǎn zhì (远志 Polygalae Radix, polygala [root]) and Shí chāng pú (石菖蒲 Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, acorus [root]).
- Hemorrhage of the ocular fundus: Add Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]) Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]).
Headache fromqì vacuity and external contraction: Add Màn jīng zǐ (蔓荆子 Viticis Fructus, vitex [fruit]) and Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]).
