Read as a book
Select the book of interest from the items below this panel. Each book has been broken down in such a way that each heading (chapter, section, or original line of the text) in the paper edition becomes a separate row in the database. This allows the texts to be read as a book by clicking through the rows sequentially.
From the table of contents, you can click on any chapter or section of the book to take you straight there.
Searches
- First, select Headword only or Headword and Text depending on whether you wish to search in the heading of an entry/article or through the heading and the text below it.
- Then, in the search box, enter unaccented Pīnyīn, simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese, or English (literal translation of the point name) to perform searches through both books at the same time.
Note that joined-up Pīnyīn can be used to search for headwords, but not the whole text. - After entering your search word(s), you will see the Search Results appear, giving you all chapters, sections, or lines from the books in which the search string occurs.
- A filter box below Results allows you to insert another search string to narrow your search. So, for example, if your search string is
ren shen,
you can addheadache
in the filter box. To find all formulas in whichren shen
andheadache
both appear, either in the headword or headword and text, depending on which selection you have made. - Note that Shāng Hán Lùn is presented with the lines of the original text in the order adopted in most modern textbooks, although the numbering of the lines follows the Sòng version (宋本) order, as does the preview of search results. Those wishing to see the preview original lines in the Sòng version order can click on the button below the search box.
Links
- The texts include copious links to the Dictionary, Medicinals, and Formulas.
- For those studying Chinese, each character of the simplified Chinese text is linked to the Terms table, where examples of its use can be found, together with links to stroke order animations.
