Steaming bone

骨蒸 〔骨蒸〕gǔ zhēng

A steaming disease that is characterized by tidal heat, night sweating, forceless panting, heart vexation and reduced sleep, heat in the palms, and yellow or reddish urine. Steaming bone is so called because the heat appears to emanate from the bone or marrow.

Medicinal therapy: Nourish yīn and clear heat using formulas such as Large Gentian and Turtle Shell Powder (秦艽鳖甲散 qín jiāo biē jiǎ sǎn) or Bone-Clearing Powder (清骨散 qīng gǔ sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on KI, HT, and GV. Select KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), KI-1 (Gushing Spring, 湧泉 yǒng quán), HT-8 (Lesser Mansion, 少府 shào fǔ), and HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén); needle with even supplementation and drainage.

Point selection according to signs: For tidal heat, add GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), and PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ). For night sweating, add HT-6 (Yīn Cleft, 阴郄 yīn xī), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), and LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ). For panting, add BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), and BL-43 (Gāo-Huāng Transport, 膏肓俞 gāo huāng shù). For heart vexation and reduced sleep, add BL-15 (Heart Transport, 心俞 xīn shù), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and HT-5 (Connecting Lǐ, 通里 tōng lǐ). A moxibustion formula suggested by Liu Wan-Su (1120–1200 CE) of the Jīn Dynasty is to first moxa GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), and then moxa GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), burning 5–7 cones at each point.
