BL-15 Heart Transport

心俞 〔心俞〕xīn shù

Alternate names: 背俞 bèi shù, Back Transport; 伍焦之间 wǔ jiāo zhī jiān, Within the Fifth Burner; 心之俞 xīn zhī shù, Heart's Transport

Channel: BL, Foot Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Bladder Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the fifth thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classic location: One cùn and five fēn either side of the spine, below the fifth vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: The medial cutaneous branches of the posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein. Medial cutaneous branches of the posterior rami of the 5th and 6th thoracic nerves; deeper, their lateral branches.

Action: Nourishes the heart and quiets the spirit; clears heat and stabilizes the mind; loosens the chest and regulates qì.

Modern indications: Epilepsy; fright palpitation; cough; vomiting of blood (blood ejection); insomnia; profuse dreaming; forgetfulness; heart vexation; epilepsy.

Classic indications: Heat effusion and aversion to cold; heart pain; vexation and oppression in the heart and chest; coughing of malign blood; retching and vomiting and inability to get food and drink down; mania and withdrawal; epilepsy; heat in the heart of the palms and soles; seminal emission and white turbidity; forgetfulness; shortness of breath; sniveling nose; eye pain and tearing; not speaking for years.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn downward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 3 min.

Needle sensation: Distension and numbness spreading forward to the region of the heart.

Point groups: Transport point (shù xué) of the heart.
