BL-16 Governing Transport

督俞 〔督俞〕dū shù

Alternate names: 高盖 gāo gài, High Cover; 高益 gāo yì, High Boost

Channel: BL, Foot Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Bladder Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the sixth thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classic location: One cùn and five fēn either side of the spine, below the sixth vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: Medial branches of the posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein, the descending branch of the transverse cervical artery. The dorsal scapular nerve, the medial cutaneous branches of the posterior rami of the 6th and 7th thoracic nerves; deeper, their lateral branches.

Action: Loosens the chest and rectifies qì; promotes regulated flow through the triple burner.

Modern indications: Heart pain; oppression in the chest; abdominal pain; alternating heat effusion and aversion to cold; panting.

Classic indications: Thunderous rumbling of the intestines; counterflow qì.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn downward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 5‒10 min.
