KI-6 Shining Sea

照海 〔照海〕zhào hǎi

Alternate names: 漏阴 lòu yīn, Leaky Yin; 阴蹻 yīn qiāo, Yin Springing; 阴跷 yīn qiāo, Yin Springing

Channel: KI, Foot Lesser Yīn (shào yīn) Kidney Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the medial aspect of the foot, about 1 cùn inferior to the lower border of the medial malleolus, inferior to the tibialis posterior tendon.

Classic location: Four fēn below the inner anklebone, in the depression bordered by sinews in front and behind, the anklebone above, and the soft bone below. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: Posteroinferiorly, the posterior tibial artery and vein. The medial crural cutaneous nerve; deeper, the tibial nerve.

Action: Frees the channels and harmonizes provisioning; drains fire and courses qì; clears the spirit-mind; disinhibits the throat.

Modern indications: Menstrual irregularities; vaginal discharge; yīn protrusion (prolapse of the uterus); frequent urination; dribbling urinary block; constipation; painful dry throat; epilepsy; insomnia.

Classic indications: Eye pain; abdominal pain; nocturnal epilepsy; sorrowfulness; no desire to eat; sudden mounting (shàn) and smaller abdominal pain; yellow urine; rough dribbling urination; oppression in the chest; stomach reflux; rumbling intestines; constipation; intestinal wind bleeding; difficult delivery; postpartum abdominal pain; persistent flow of lochia; retention of the placenta; swollen and itchy pudendum.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒10 min.

Point groups: Confluence point (bā mài jiāo huì xué) of the yīn springing vessel (yīn qiāo mài).
