Pain in the smaller abdomen due to various factors including damp-heat, static blood, bowel qì stoppage, or kidney vacuity. When due to bladder damp-heat, abdominal pain and distension is accompanied by inhibited urination and sometimes thirst with desire for fluids, as well as a rapid pulse, and it is treated by clearing and disinhibiting damp-heat with formulas like Polyporus Decoction (猪苓汤zhū líng tāng), and Poria Five Powder (五苓散wǔ líng sǎn) and their variations. When due to blood binding in the bladder, abdominal pain and distension is accompanied by disinhibited urination and urinary urgencyand is treated by quickening the blood and expelling stasis with formulas such as Substitute Dead-On Pill (代抵当丸dài dǐ dàng wán). Pain in the smaller abdomen and around the umbilicus accompanied by dry bound stool calls for moistening the intestines or precipitation with Honey Enema (蜜煎导法mì jiān dǎo fǎ), Hemp Seed Pill (麻仁丸má rén wán), or Major Qì-Coordinating Decoction (大承气汤dà chéng qì tāng). Lower abdominal pain and distension due to excessive drinking and sexual activity is accompanied by frequent inhibited urination and is treated by supplementing the kidney with Life Saver Kidney Qì Pill (济生肾气丸jì shēng shèn qì wán). Smaller abdominal pain is also seen in mounting qì, menstrual pain, vaginal discharge, intestinal welling-abscess, postpartum abdominal pain, and strangury.
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV, LR, and LI. Use CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), LR-1 (Large Pile, 大敦 dà dūn), LR-4 (Mound Center, 中封 zhōng fēng), and LI-8 (Lower Ridge, 下廉 xià lián) as the main points. Secondary points and needle stimulus should be chosen in accordance with the cause. For unbearable acute abdominal pain, burn five cones of moxa Solitary Yīn (独阴dú yīn) at the crease below the middle joint of the second toe. Compare also lesser abdominal pain.
