Yīn vacuity with yáng hyperactivity

阴虚阳亢 〔陰虛陽亢〕yīn xū yáng kàng

Essence-blood or fluid depletion causing a yīn-yáng imbalance in which yáng becomes unrestrained and exuberant. Yáng hyperactivity exacerbates depletion of fluid so that a vicious circle is set in motion. Yīn vacuity with yáng hyperactivity is characterized by tidal heat, reddening of the cheeks, night sweating, vexing heat in the five hearts, coughing of blood, emaciation, dry red tongue, and rapid fine pulse. In some cases, there is insomnia, vexation, agitation, and irascibility, or seminal emission and excessive libido.

Medicinal therapy: Foster yīn and subdue yáng. Use Gastrodia and Uncaria Beverage (天麻钩藤饮 tiān má gōu téng yǐn) or Liver-Settling Wind-Extinguishing Decoction (镇肝熄风汤 zhèn gān xī fēng tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on KI, LR, and HT, needling with supplementation at BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), and KI-2 (Blazing Valley, 然谷 rán gǔ), and with drainage at GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), KI-1 (Gushing Spring, 湧泉 yǒng quán), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), and HT-8 (Lesser Mansion, 少府 shào fǔ).

Point selection according to signs: For tidal heat, add PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng), needling with drainage. For night sweating, add SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī) and HT-6 (Yīn Cleft, 阴郄 yīn xī), needling with drainage. For coughing of blood, add LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), and LU-6 (Collection Hole, 孔最 kǒng zuì), needling with drainage. For insomnia, add Alert Spirit Quartet (四神聪 sì shén cōng) and HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén), needling with drainage. For seminal emission, add HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén), PC-7 (Great Mound, 大陵 dà líng), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), and BL-52 (Will Chamber, 志室 zhì shì), needling with drainage.
