Gastrodia and Uncaria Beverage

天麻钩藤饮 〔天麻鉤藤飲〕tiān má gōu téng yǐn

Ingredients:

Action: Calms the liver and extinguishes wind.

Indication: Liver yáng transforming into wind with dizziness, tinnitus, headache, lumbar pain, and insomnia. Tongue: Red. Pulse: Stringlike and rapid.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Tiān má, Gōu téng, and Shí jué míng, the sovereign agents, calm liver yáng and extinguish liver wind. They are supported by Zhī zǐ and Huáng qín, which clear and drain liver fire, Yì mǔ cǎo and Niú xī, which quicken the blood and conduct blood downward, Dù zhòng and sangjisheng[1], which supplement the liver and kidney, and Shǒu wū téng and Fú shén, which nourish the blood and quiet the spirit. Recent pharmacological tests show that most of these agents reduce blood pressure, and in clinical practice the formula is often used to specifically to treat hypertension. Huáng qín, Dù zhòng, and sangjisheng[1] also have a fetus-quieting effect, while Niú xī and Yì mǔ cǎo also address treat epilepsy in pregnancy.
