Actions: Settles the liver and extinguishes wind; fosters yīn and subdues yáng.
Indications: Ascendant hyperactivity of liver yáng with dizziness, tinnitus, and deafness, profuse dreaming, insomnia, heart palpitation, and forgetfulness. Pulse: Stringlike and long. Now used for high blood pressure, dizziness and neurasthenia presenting with signs of ascendant hyperactivity of liver yáng.
Category: Wind-eliminating formulas / Internal wind formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Notes: The name is an evident allusion to the idiom 高屋建瓴 (gāo wū jiàn líng) which describes water being poured from a steep roof, creating an unstoppable and powerful downward flow. In the context of 建瓴汤 jiàn líng tāng, this imagery is used metaphorically to illustrate the formula’s ability to guide excessive liver yáng downward, helping to calm the liver, extinguish internal wind, and nourish yīn.
