建瓴汤 〔建瓴湯〕jiàn líng tāng

Ingredients:
- Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]) 30g
- Dài zhě shí (代赭石 Haematitum , hematite) 24g
- Lóng gǔ (龙骨 Mastodi Ossis Fossilia, dragon bone) 18g
- Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell) 18g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 18g
- Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) 12g
- Huái shān yào (淮山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]) 30g
- Bǎi zǐ rén (柏子仁 Platycladi Semen, arborvitae seed) 12g
Action: Settles the liver and extinguishes wind; fosters yīn and subdues yáng.
Indication: Ascendant hyperactivity of liver yáng with dizziness, tinnitus, and deafness, profuse dreaming, insomnia, heart palpitation, and forgetfulness. Pulse: Stringlike and long. Now used for high blood pressure, dizziness and neurasthenia presenting with signs of ascendant hyperactivity of liver yáng.

Method: Decoct with water.
Notes: The name is an evident allusion to the expression 高屋建瓴, to pour water from a steep roof, i.e., to sweep down irresistably from a commanding height, which here describes the force of the formula.
