Indications:
- Warms the kidney and invigorates yáng: Kidney yáng vacuity impotence, seminal cold, enuresis, and frequent urination.
- Strengthens sinew and bone and dispels cold-damp: Enduring
cold-damp impediment , limp wilting sinews and bones, cold pain in the knees. - Additional uses: Xiān máo is used for treating spleen and kidney yáng vacuity, manifesting in diarrhea and/or cold pain of the stomach duct and abdomen. Here, xiān máo is used to supplement the life gate fire, warm the spleen, and check cold diarrhea. For this purpose, combine bǔ gǔ zhī (补骨脂 Psoraleae Fructus, psoralea [fruit];), gān jiāng (干姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger), rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng), and bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root];).
Dosage & Method:
Oral: 3–10g in decoctions or prepared as a medicinal liquor. Use the raw form for impediment pain; stir-fry it with wine to treat impotence.
Warning:
Contraindicated in yīn vacuity with effulgent fire.
Quality:
Thick long firm roots that are brown on the outside are best.
