Properties: Bitter; cold.
Channel entry: Liver and heart channels.
Indications:
- Calms the liver and subdues yáng: Dizziness due to ascendant hyperactivity of liver yáng or liver fire.
- Downbears counterflow ascent of stomach qì or counterflow ascent of lung qì: Counterflow of lung or stomach qì, presenting with vomiting, hiccup, or panting.
- Cools the blood and stanches bleeding: Blood heat patterns of vomiting of blood (blood ejection), nosebleed (nǜ xuè), and flooding and spotting.
Dosage & Method: Oral: 9–30g.
Warnings: Zhě shí should be used with care in pregnancy. Because it contains a slight amount of arsenic, it is unsuitable for prolonged use and should not be used in excessive quantities.
Quality: The best quality is reddish brown, with distinct bends in the layers seen on the cross section.
