Major Wind-Stabilizing Pill

大定风珠 〔大定風珠〕dà dìng fēng zhū

Ingredients:

Action: Enriches yīn and extinguishes wind; stems desertion.

Indication: Severe damage to yīn in enduring sickness with vacuity wind stirring internally, manifesting in the form of tugging and slackening. Tongue: Crimson with scant fur. Pulse: Vacuous, on the verge of desertion.

Method: Melt the ejiao in and add the egg yolk to a decoction of the other ingredients.

Rationale: Jī zǐ huáng ē jiāo enrich yīn and nourish humor, replenishing the almost exhausted true yīn and calming the internal liver wind. Shēng dì huáng, Huǒ má rén, Mài dōng, and Bái sháo enrich yīn and nourish the blood, emolliate the liver and extinguish wind. Guī bǎn, Biē jiǎ, and Mǔ lì, being salty can boost kidney yīn, and being heavy, they can subdue liver yáng. Gān cǎo and Wǔ wèi zǐ are sweet and sour and help to form yīn, helping the other agents to enrich yīn and extinguish wind. Very often Dān shēn is used instead of Bǎi zǐ rén. If necessary, Huáng qín, Dù zhòng, Chì sháo, and Dì lóng can be added.
