Triple-Armored Pulse-Restorative Decoction
三甲复脉汤 〔三甲復脈湯〕sān jiǎ fù mài tāng

Ingredients:
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 18g
- Dì huáng (地黄 Rehmanniae Radix, rehmannia [root]) 18g
- ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) 9g
- Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) 15g
- Shēng bái sháo (生白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba Cruda, raw white peony [root]) 6–9g
- Má rén (麻仁 Cannabis Fructus, cannabis fruit) 9g
- Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell) 15g
- Shēng biē jiǎ (生鳖甲 Trionycis Carapax Crudus, raw [fresh-water] turtle shell) 24g
- Guī bǎn (龟版 Testudinis Plastrum, tortoise plastron) 30g
Action: Nurtures yīn and subdues yáng; nourishes the blood and extinguishes wind.
Indication: Yīn-blood depletion in the latter stages of febrile disease with wriggling of the extremities, and tetanic reversal. Tongue: Crimson and dry. Pulse: Forceless, fine, rapid and skipping. It also treats affect damage or miscellaneous disease with yīn vacuity and hyperactive yáng, characterized by dizziness, tinnitus, and heart palpitation.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Zhì gān cǎo supplements heart qì and restores the pulse. Shú dì huáng, Bái sháo, Mài dōng, Huǒ má rén, and ē jiāo enrich yīn and nourish the blood, thereby abating vacuity heat. Mǔ lì, Guī bǎn, and Biē jiǎ foster yīn and subdue yáng, thereby settling the tetanic reversal. Over recent years, this formula has also been used to treat spasm due to hypocalcemia, making use of the high calcium content of Mǔ lì and Guī bǎn.
