Yīn vacuity

阴虚 〔陰虛〕yīn xū

The manifestation of insufficiency of the yīn aspect and depletion of liquid and blood. When yīn is vacuous, internal heat arises; hence the main signs are of heat and fluid depletion: slight heat effusion (low fever), heat in the hearts of the palms and soles (vexing heat in the five hearts), postmeridian heat effusion, dry mouth and throat, night sweating, emaciation, short voidings of yellow urine, red tongue with little or no fur, and a forceless fine rapid pulse. Note that the signs of heat in yīn vacuity differ from those of repletion heat by being limited in degree (slight heat effusion), location (palms, soles, chest), and time (latter part of the day, especially evening and night).

See yīn vacuity with internal heat and yīn vacuity with effulgent fire. Yīn vacuity may be focused in any of the five viscera, especially in the kidney. See kidney yīn vacuity; liver yīn vacuity; heart yīn vacuity; lung yīn vacuity; spleen yīn vacuity.
