BL-52 Will Chamber

志室 〔志室〕 zhì shì

Alternate names: BL-47

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel; shared point on the yáng springing (yáng qiāo) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lower back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra, 3 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: In the depression three cùn either side of the spine, below the fourteenth vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The lateral branch of the posterior ramus of the 12th thoracic nerve and the lateral branch of the 1st lumbar nerve.

Action: Supplements the kidney and boosts essence; disinhibits urine and abducts dampness.

Modern indications: Seminal emission; impotence; inhibited urination; water swelling; painful stiffness of the back.

Classical indications: Abdominal distension; rib-side fullness; pain and swelling of the genitals; dribbling urination; vomiting counterflow; nontransformation of grain and water (undigested food in the stool); sudden turmoil (cholera).

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.7‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 7‒15 cones; pole 10‒30 min.

Needle sensation: Distension and numbness, spreading either downward or downward and outward.
