Clearing heat and resolving summerheat

清热解暑 〔清熱解暑〕qīng rè jiě shǔ

A method of treatment used to address externally contracted summerheat-heat characterized by headache, generalized heat, sweating, vexation and thirst, short voiding of reddish urine, thin yellow tongue fur, and a rapid floating pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Use heat-clearing summerheat-resolving medicinals such as fresh mint (Menthae Herba, 薄荷 bò hé), lablab flower (Lablab Flos, 扁豆花 biǎn dòu huā), sweet wormwood (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 青蒿 qīng hāo), mosla (Moslae Herba, 香薷 xiāng rú), lonicera (Lonicerae Flos, 金银花 jīn yín huā), forsythia (Forsythiae Fructus, 连翘 lián qiào), phragmites (Phragmitis Rhizoma, 芦根 lú gēn), and coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián).

Representative formulas include Network-Clearing Beverage (清络饮 qīng luò yǐn) and Wáng’s Summerheat-Clearing Qì-Boosting Decoction (王氏清暑益气汤 wáng shì qīng shǔ yì qì tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Needle with drainage at PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ). For headache, add GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì) and GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí). For vexation and thirst, add HT-5 (Connecting Lǐ, 通里 tōng lǐ) and KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi).
