Clearing heat and opening the orifices

清热开窍 〔清熱開竅〕qīng rè kāi qiào

Also cool opening; clearing the heart and opening the orifices. A method of treatment used to address externally contracted febrile disease patterns, such as heat entering the pericardium, characterized by high fever with clouded spirit and delirious speech, vexation and agitation, parched lips and dry teeth, tetanic reversal, and convulsions, including child fright wind.

Medicinal therapy: A representative heart-clearing orifice-opening formula is Peaceful Palace Bovine Bezoar Pill (安宫牛黄丸 ān gōng niú huáng wán), which can be combined with Provisioning-Clearing Decoction (清营汤 qīng yíng tāng). Others include Purple Snow Elixir (紫雪丹 zǐ xuě dān), Spirit-Like Rhinoceros Horn Elixir (神犀丹 shén xī dān), and Supreme Jewel Elixir (至宝丹 zhì bǎo dān). These may be combined with blood-cooling medicinals, heat-clearing medicinals, and toxin-resolving medicinals where necessary. Furthermore, wind stroke can be treated with Supreme Jewel Elixir combined with liver-calming wind-extinguishing medicinals.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV, PC, and Twelve Well Points (十二井穴 shí èr jǐng xué). Select GV-26 (Water Trough, 水沟 shuǐ gōu), Twelve Well Points, PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí); needle with drainage or prick to bleed. For convulsions, add GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), GV-16 (Wind Mansion, 风府 fēng fǔ), and LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng).
