GV-26 Water Trough

水沟 〔水溝〕shuǐ gōu

Alternate names: 水沟 shuǐ gōu, Water Trough; 鼻人中 bí rén zhōng, Nose Human Center; 鬼宫 guǐ gōng, Ghost Palace; 鬼客厅 guǐ kè tīng, Ghost Reception Room; 鬼市 guǐ shì, Ghost Market

Channel: GV, Governing () Vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located superior to the upper lip, in the philtrum, one third of the distance from the base of the nasal septum to the red skin of the upper lip on the midline.

Classic location: In the depression close to the nostrils at the center of the trough below the nose. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: The superior labial artery and vein. The buccal branch of the facial nerve and the branch of the infraorbital nerve.

Action: Arouses the spirit and opens the orifices; clears heat and extinguishes wind.

Modern indications: Mania and withdrawal; epilepsy; child fright wind; clouded spirit; deviated eyes and mouth; painful stiffness of the lumbar spine.

Classic indications: Wind stroke with clenched jaw; loss of consciousness; trembling lips; fright wind; itchy painful red wind eye; sniveling nose; loss of smell; gripping pain in the heart and abdomen; qì surging into the heart and chest; reverse flow; inability to stand erect; dispersion-thirst; water swelling; headache.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.2‒0.3 cùn upward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒15 min.

Needle sensation: Localized distension and heaviness.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the governing vessel and the stomach and large intestine channels; one of the thirteen ghost points.
