Clouded spirit
神昏 〔神昏〕shén hūn
Also clouded spirit-mind. Stupor or complete loss of consciousness, of sudden or gradual onset. In bowel heat patterns, for example, it develops gradually, and, in severe cases, is associated with delirious speech and picking at bedclothes. Clouded spirit differs from hypersomnia, in that the patient does not respond when called to. Clouded spirit can occur in vacuity and repletion patterns: Vacuity patterns include desertion patterns and fulminant desertion of heart yáng. Repletion patterns include heat entering the pericardium, bowel heat patterns, heat toxin attacking the heart, summerheat patterns, phlegm-fire clouding the spirit, extreme heat engendering wind, wind-phlegm internal block (as in wind stroke), and blood stasis exploiting the heart. Clouded spirit in repletion is treated by the principle of opening the orifices. In vacuity patterns, it is treated by supplementation. Compare coma.
