Coma

昏迷 〔昏迷〕hūn mí

Clouding of the spirit with complete or partial loss of consciousness; usually caused by evil obstructing the clear orifices and clouding the bright spirit. Coma may be observed in cold damage, warm disease, wind stroke, inversion patterns, and epilepsy. Whether due to external contraction or to internal damage, it is always a critical sign.

Medicinal therapy: Treatment should be determined according to cause, but the first step is to open the orifices and arouse the spirit using formulas such as Storax Pill (苏合香丸 sū hé xiāng wán), Supreme Jewel Elixir (至宝丹 zhì bǎo dān), Purple Snow Elixir (紫雪丹 zǐ xuě dān), Peaceful Palace Bovine Bezoar Pill (安宫牛黄丸 ān gōng niú huáng wán), and Bovine Bezoar Heart-Clearing Pill (牛黄清心丸 niú huáng qīng xīn wán).

Acumoxatherapy: To open the orifices and arouse the spirit, needle GV-26 (Human Center, 人中 rén zhōng), KI-1 (Gushing Spring, 湧泉 yǒng quán), HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén), and PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng), and prick Ten Diffusing Points (十宣 shí xuān) to bleed.

See opening the orifices.
