GV-27 Extremity of the Mouth

兑端 〔兌端〕 duì duān

Alternate names: 唇上端 chún shàng duān, Upper Extremity of the Lip; 兑通兑 duì tōng duì, Mouth Means Edge; 壮骨 zhuàng gǔ, Bone Strengthener

Channel: GV, governing () vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper lip, at the junction of the philtrum and the red skin of the lip on the midline.

Classical location: At the peak of the upper lip. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The superior labial artery and vein. The buccal branch of the facial nerve and the branch of the infraorbital nerve.

Action: Nourishes yīn and clears heat; relieves pain and quiets the spirit.

Modern indications: Mania and withdrawal; painful swollen gums; deviated mouth; sniveling and nosebleed.

Classical indications: Nasal congestion; nosebleed; mouth sores; jaundice; yellow urine; dry tongue; clenched jaw and chattering of the teeth.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.2‒0.3 cùn upward oblique insertion. Moxa: 1‒3 cones; pole 3‒5 min.

Warning: Moxa contraindicated in modern texts.
