Deviated eyes and mouth

口眼㖞斜 〔口眼喎斜〕kǒu yǎn wāi xié [kǒu yǎn kuāi xié]

Tension in the sinews of one side of the face and relaxation in those of the other side manifesting in skewing of the mouth and inability to close the eyes. Deviated eyes and mouth are attributed to wind or wind-phlegm obstructing the channels. Deviated mouth and surrounding area without deviated eyes, accompanied by hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) and sometimes inability to speak is observed in wind stroke.

Biomedical correspondence: facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy).

Medicinal therapy: Use Pull Aright Powder (牵正散 qiān zhèng sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LI and ST, supported by TB, GB, and BL. Select GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), TB-17 (Wind Screen, 翳风 yì fēng), ST-4 (Earth Granary, 地仓 dì cāng), ST-6 (Cheek Carriage, 颊车 jiá chē), Pull Aright (牵正 qiān zhèng), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), GB-14 (Yáng White, 阳白 yáng bái), BL-2 (Bamboo Gathering, 攒竹 zǎn zhú), and ST-2 (Four Whites, 四白 sì bái). In the initial stage, use transverse needling and point joining; for advanced stages, use shallow needling with supplementation.
