Clearing heat and resolving the exterior

清热解表 〔清熱解表〕qīng rè jiě biǎo

1. A method of treatment that uses cool acrid exterior-resolving medicinals to treat wind-warmth exterior patterns.

A representative formula is Lonicera and Forsythia Powder (银翘散 yín qiào sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LI, LU, and TB. Needle with drainage at LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē), and GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī).

2. One form of resolving both exterior and interior, used to address mild exterior heat with more pronounced interior heat characterized by high fever, vexation and thirst, mild aversion to wind or cold, little or no sweating, constipation, yellow urine, dry white or yellow tongue fur, and a slippery rapid pulse.

Medicinal therapy: A representative heat-clearing exterior-resolving formula is Three Yellows and Gypsum Decoction (三黄石膏汤 sān huáng shí gāo tāng), in which gypsum (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏 shí gāo), coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín), and phellodendron (Phellodendri Cortex, 黄柏 huáng bǎi) clear interior heat, and ephedra (Ephedrae Herba, 麻黄 má huáng) and fermented soybean (Sojae Semen Praeparatum, 淡豆豉 dàn dòu chǐ) resolve the exterior evil.
