Resolving both exterior and interior

表裏双解 〔表裏雙解〕biǎo lǐ shuāng jiě

A method of treatment used to address interior and exterior patterns at the same time. There are two main forms:

  1. Treating exterior evils in the outer body with repletion accumulation in the interior marked by aversion to cold, heat effusion, abdominal distension and pain, nausea and constipation, and a slippery floating pulse. A representative formula is Officinal Magnolia Bark Seven Agents Decoction (厚朴七物汤 hòu pò qī wù tāng), which contains Cinnamon Twig Decoction (桂枝汤 guì zhī tāng) minus peony (Paeoniae Radix, 芍药 sháo yào) to resolve the exterior, and Officinal Magnolia Bark Three Agents Decoction (厚朴三物汤 hòu pò sān wù tāng) to treat the interior.
  2. Treating exuberant interior heat with a concurrent exterior pattern, marked by high fever without sweating, red face and eyes, generalized hypertonicity, dry nose, thirst, bitter taste in the mouth, vexation and agitation, delirious speech, dry tongue, and a rapid surging pulse. A representative formula is Three Yellows and Gypsum Decoction (三黄石膏汤 sān huáng shí gāo tāng) in which ephedra (Ephedrae Herba, 麻黄 má huáng) and litsea (Litseae Rhizoma et Radix, 豆豉姜 dòu chǐ jiāng) resolve the exterior, while gypsum (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏 shí gāo), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín), coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián), and gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀子 shān zhī zǐ) clear the interior.
