Summerheat-wind

暑风 〔暑風〕shǔ fēng

1. Contraction of wind after damage by summerheat causing periodic convulsions of the extremities.

Medicinal therapy: Clear summerheat and dispel wind with Six-Ingredient Mosla Beverage (六味香薷饮 liù wèi xiāng rú yǐn); if phlegm is copious, use variations of Six Harmonizations Decoction (六和汤 liù hé tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on PC, LI, ST, and GB. Select PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), and TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān); needle with drainage. For convulsions of the limbs, add SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán), and BL-57 (Mountain Support, 承山 chéng shān). For copious phlegm, add CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn) and ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng).

3. Itching in the summertime like the pricking of needles and sometimes associated with redness and swelling.

Medicinal therapy: Dispel wind and clear the network vessels. Use formulas like Six Harmonizations Decoction (六和汤 liù hé tāng) and Wind-Dispersing Powder (消风散 xiāo fēng sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LI, SP, and ST. Select LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and GB-31 (Wind Market, 风巿 fēng shì); needle with drainage.

Point selection according to signs: For redness and swelling of the skin, add BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù). For great heat [effusion], add GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī). For pronounced itching, add Itch Reliever (止痒 zhǐ yǎng).
