Summerheat stroke
中暑 〔中暑〕zhòng shǔ
1. Contraction of summerheat evil in the torrid heat of summer. Summerheat stroke is characterized by sudden oppression and collapse, clouding and loss of consciousness, generalized heat, panting, loss of speech, mild clenching of the jaws, or open mouth and dry teeth, great sweating or absence of sweating, and a vacuous rapid pulse. In severe cases, there is coma with convulsions of the limbs.
Medicinal therapy: After moving the patient into a cool airy place, administer summerheat-clearing orifice-opening formulas such as
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV, PC, LI, and BL. Select GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), GV-26 (Water Trough, 水沟 shuǐ gōu), HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén), PC-9 (Central Hub, 中冲 zhōng chōng), PC-3 (Marsh at the Bend, 曲泽 qū zé), and BL-40 (Bend Center, 委中 wěi zhōng); needle with drainage or prick to bleed.
Point selection according to signs:
- For high fever, add Ten Diffusing Points (
十宣 shí xuān), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), and PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng). - For sweating and expiring pulse, add LU-9 (Great Abyss, 太渊 tài yuān), KI-7 (Recover Flow, 复溜 fù liū), HT-6 (Yīn Cleft, 阴郄 yīn xī), and CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi)mx. For convulsions of the limbs, add SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán), and BL-57 (Mountain Support, 承山 chéng shān).
Guā-shā is also effective for summerheat stroke a commonly used home remedy.

4. Contraction of cold in the summer, with abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
