Softening hardness and dispersing binds
软坚散结 〔軟堅散結〕 ruǎn jiān sàn jié
To treat turbid phlegm or static blood gathering to form lumps. Softening hardness and dispersing binds is used to treat scrofula, goiter, mother-of-malaria, and dry stool.
Scrofula or goiter (瘰瘰 luǒ lì) due to turbid phlegm congealing and gathering.
Medicinal therapy: Disperse phlegm, soften hardness, and disperse binds with agents such as Zhejiang fritillaria (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus, 浙贝母 zhè bèi mǔ), sargassum (Sargassum, 海藻 hǎi zǎo), kelp (Laminariae seu Eckloniae Thallus, 昆布 kūn bù), and oyster shell (Ostreae Concha, 牡蛎 mǔ lì),
Acumoxatherapy: Select
Mother-of-malaria (疟母 nüè mǔ) (recognized in modern medicine as splenomegaly) due to enduring malaria.
Medicinal therapy: Soften hardness and break binds with turtle shell (Trionycis Carapax, 鳖甲 biē jiǎ), sparganium (Sparganii Rhizoma, 三棱 sān léng), and zedoary (Curcumae Rhizoma, 莪朮 é zhú).
Acumoxatherapy: Select GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), LR-13 (Camphorwood Gate, 章门 zhāng mén), and Glomus Root (
Dry stool (大便干燥 dà biàn gān zào) due to heat binding in the stomach and large intestines.
Medicinal therapy: This is treated by draining-precipitation. However, the use of cold salty mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas, 芒硝 máng xiāo) in precipitant formulas can also said to be a form of softening hardness and dispersing binds.
Acumoxatherapy: Select SP-14 (Abdominal Bind, 腹结 fù jié), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), and ST-37 (Upper Great Hollow, 上巨虚 shàng jù xū); needle with drainage.
