Mother-of-malaria

疟母 〔瘧母〕nüè mǔ

Glomus lump occurring in enduring malaria; attributed to stubborn phlegm with static blood binding under the rib-side.

Biomedical correspondence: splenomegaly in malaria.

Medicinal therapy: Quicken the blood and free the network vessels; move qì and disperse hardness. Because the underlying condition is one of vacuity, the principle of simultaneous supplementation and attack should be applied. Use Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction (补中益气汤 bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng) plus turtle shell (Trionycis Carapax, 鳖甲 biē jiǎ) or Four Animals Decoction (四兽饮 sì shòu yǐn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV, PC, SI, and LR. Select GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), GV-13 (Kiln Path, 陶道 táo dào), PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), LR-13 (Camphorwood Gate, 章门 zhāng mén), Glomus Root (痞根 pǐ gēn), BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù), and BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù); needle with drainage.
