Lumbar and back pain

腰背痛 〔腰背痛〕 yāo bèi tòng

From The Magic Pivot (灵枢 líng shū, wǔ lóng jī yè bié). Lumbar pain spreading into the back.

Medicinal therapy: For debilitation of kidney qì and wind-damp exploiting the channels and network vessels, Pubescent Angelica and Mistletoe Decoction (独活寄生汤 dú huó jì shēng tāng). For prolonged sitting, use Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction (补中益气汤 bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng) or Eight-Gem Decoction (八珍汤 bā zhēn tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on BL, GV, CV, and KI. Main points: BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), GV-3 (Lumbar Yáng Pass, 腰阳关 yāo yáng guān), BL-40 (Bend Center, 委中 wěi zhōng), ouch points (阿是穴 ā shì xué), CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán), BL-60 (Kunlun Mountains, 昆仑 kūn lún), and BL-37 (Gate of Abundance, 殷门 yīn mén); needle with supplementation and add moxa.

Point selection according to cause: For debilitation of kidney qì and wind-damp exploiting the channels and network vessels, supplement and moxa KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), KI-7 (Recover Flow, 复溜 fù liū), and BL-64 (Capital Bone, 京骨 jīng gǔ), and drain GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), GB-31 (Wind Market, 风巿 fēng shì), TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán). For prolonged sitting, add BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-21 (Stomach Transport, 胃俞 wèi shù), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi); needle with supplementation and add moxa.
