Ingredients:

• Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) (or Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root])) 6–9g
• Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 9–12g
• Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 9–12g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 3–6g
• Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9–12g
• Dì huáng (地黄 Rehmanniae Radix, rehmannia [root]) 9–12g
• Sháo yào (芍药 Paeoniae Radix, peony [root]) 6–9g
• Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 6–9g
• Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 1–3g
• Dà zǎo (大枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 3–5 pieces

Action: Supplements qì and blood.

Indication: Depletion of both qì and blood with emaciation, withered-yellow facial complexion, and fatigue. Other possible signs include menstrual irregularities, persistent flooding and spotting, and open sores that fail to heal.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Sì jūn zǐ tāng (四君子汤 Four Gentlemen Decoction)supplements qì and fortifies the spleen, while Sì wù tāng (四物汤 Four Agents Decoction)supplements the blood and regulates the liver. This formula has all these actions combined.

Variations:

• Qì-blood vacuity with insomnia and heart palpitation: Add Suān zǎo rén (酸枣仁 Ziziphi Spinosi Semen, spiny jujube [kernel]) and Bǎi zǐ rén (柏子仁 Platycladi Semen, arborvitae seed).
• Qì-blood vacuity with lumbar pain and seminal emission: Add Dù zhòng (杜仲 Eucommiae Cortex, eucommia [bark]) and Jīn yīng zǐ (金樱子 Rosae Laevigatae Fructus, Cherokee rose fruit).
• Qì-blood vacuity with cough: Add Xìng rén (杏仁 Armeniacae Semen, apricot kernel) and Zǐ wǎn (紫菀 Asteris Radix, aster [root]).
• Qì-blood vacuity with persistent scant flooding and spotting: Add ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) and ài yè (艾叶 Artemisiae Argyi Folium, mugwort [leaf]) leaf.
• Qì-blood vacuity with constipation: Add Huǒ má rén (火麻仁 Cannabis Fructus, cannabis fruit) and Yù lǐ rén (郁李仁 Pruni Semen, bush cherry kernel).

Notes: This is Sì jūn zǐ tāng (四君子汤 Four Gentlemen Decoction) combined with Sì wù tāng (四物汤 Four Agents Decoction).
