Pubescent Angelica and Mistletoe Decoction

Ingredients:
- Dú huó (独活 Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, pubescent angelica) 6–9g
- Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) 6–9g
- Qín jiāo (秦艽 Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, large gentian [root]) 6–9g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–9g
- Sháo yào (芍药 Paeoniae Radix, peony [root]) 6–9g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 6–9g
- Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) 6–9g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 6–9g
- Dù zhòng (杜仲 Eucommiae Cortex, eucommia [bark]) 6–9g
- Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]) 6–9g
- Xì xīn (细辛 Asari Rhizoma et Radix, asarum) 3–6g
- Dì huáng (地黄 Rehmanniae Radix, rehmannia [root]) 12–20g

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Dú huó, Fáng fēng, and Qín jiāo dispel wind and dampness, and enhance Xì xīn's action of effusing wind-cold in the yīn channels and eliminating wind-damp from the sinew and bone. These agents together address all three evils which unite to form impediment (bì). Cold and damp are encouraged to settle in the lumbus and knees as a result of liver-kidney depletion; at the same time, enduring impediment (bì) disease can cause liver-kidney depletion. Variations:
Impediment (bì) affecting the upper body: Increase Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) and Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark).Impediment (bì) affecting the lower body: Increase Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]) and Qín jiāo (秦艽 Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, large gentian [root]).- Lumbus and knees: Increase Dú huó (独活 Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, pubescent angelica) and
sangjisheng[1] . - Acute impediment pain: Add Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) and Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh).
- Enduring impediment: Add Bái huā shé (白花蛇 Bungarus seu Agkistrodon , krait/agkistrodon), Wū shé (乌蛇 Zaocys , black-striped snake), and Wú gōng (蜈蚣 Scolopendra , centipede).
Cold impediment (hán bì): Increase the warm agents and add Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]).
