Pubescent Angelica and Mistletoe Decoction

独活寄生汤 〔獨活寄生湯〕dú huó jì shēng tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Dispels wind and nourishes the blood (dispels wind-damp; supplements qì and blood; boosts the liver and kidney).

Indication: Wind-cold-damp impediment (fēng hán shī bì) and liver-kidney depletion with limp aching lumbus and knees, and joint pain. Tongue: Pale with white fur. Pulse: Fine and weak.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Dú huó, Fáng fēng, and Qín jiāo dispel wind and dampness, and enhance Xì xīn's action of effusing wind-cold in the yīn channels and eliminating wind-damp from the sinew and bone. These agents together address all three evils which unite to form impediment (). Cold and damp are encouraged to settle in the lumbus and knees as a result of liver-kidney depletion; at the same time, enduring impediment () disease can cause liver-kidney depletion. In view of this, sangjisheng[1], Niú xī, and Dù zhòng are included to supplement the liver and kidney and strengthen the sinew and bone. Rén shēn, Fú líng, and Gān cǎo supplement right qì. Shēng dì huáng, Dāng guī, and Bái sháo nourish and quicken the blood. Chuān xiōng and Ròu guì warm and free the vessels.
