Liver yáng headache

肝阳头痛 〔肝陽頭痛〕 gān yáng tóu tòng

Headache attributed to ascendant liver yáng. Liver yáng headache is identified by the accompanying dizziness, red facial complexion, flowery vision, tinnitus, bitter taste in the mouth, and rapid stringlike pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Calm the liver and subdue yáng with formulas such as Gastrodia and Uncaria Beverage (天麻钩藤饮 tiān má gōu téng yǐn) or Mother-of-Pearl Pill (珍珠母丸 zhēn zhū mǔ wán). For exuberant liver-gallbladder fire, use formulas such as Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction (龙胆泻肝汤 lóng dǎn xiè gān tāng) or Chinese Angelica, Gentian, and Aloe Pill (当归龙荟丸 dāng guī lóng huì wán).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LR, GB, and KI. Select GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), Greater yáng (tài yáng) (太阳 tài yáng), GB-4 (Forehead Fullness, 颔厌 hàn yàn), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), LR-2 (Moving Between, 行间 xíng jiān), and GB-43 (Pinched Ravine, 侠溪 xiá xī); needle with drainage. For selection of points according to affected area, see headache.

Point selection according to signs: For headache with dizziness, add BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), and GB-19 (Brain Hollow, 脑空 nǎo kōng). For vexation and irascibility, add BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù), and HT-5 (Connecting Li, 通里 tōng lǐ). For unquiet sleep, add HT-7 (Spirit Gate, 神门 shén mén).
