Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction
龙胆泻肝汤 〔龍膽瀉肝湯〕lóng dǎn xiè gān tāng

Ingredients:
- Lóng dǎn cǎo (龙胆草 Gentianae Radix, gentian [root]) 3–9g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 6–12g
- Shān zhī (山栀 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 6–12g
- Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) 3–9g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–12g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 9–15g
- Chē qián zǐ (车前子 Plantaginis Semen, plantago seed) 9–15g
- Zé xiè (泽泻 Alismatis Rhizoma, alisma [tuber]) 6–12g
- Mù tōng (木通 Akebiae Trifoliatae Caulis, trifoliate akebia) 3–6g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3–6g
Action: Drains liver and gallbladder fire; clears heat and disinhibits dampness.

Method: Decoct with water.
Warnings: This formula contains cold bitter agents that easily damage the stomach. It is contraindicated in
Rationale: Lóng dǎn, Huáng lián, and Zhī zǐ drain liver-gallbladder repletion fire and eliminate lower-burner damp-heat. Mù tōng, Zé xiè, and Chē qián zǐ clear and disinhibit lower-burner damp-heat, conducting it out with the urine. Dāng guī works with Shēng dì huáng to nourish the blood and boost yīn, preventing damage to liver yīn. Chái hú is added to course the liver and gallbladder, any damage it might cause to liver yīn being prevented by the Gān cǎo.
Variations:
Constipation : Add Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb).- Acute cholecystitis: Add Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion), Zǐ huā dì dīng (紫花地丁 Violae Herba, violet), Jīn qián cǎo (金钱草 Lysimachiae Herba, moneywort), and Yīn chén (茵陈 Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, virgate wormwood).
- Acute conjunctivitis: Add Jú huā (菊花 Chrysanthemi Flos, chrysanthemum [flower]), Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion), and Jí lí (蒺藜 Tribuli Fructus, tribulus [fruit]).
- Acute urinary tract infection: Add Biǎn xù (萹蓄 Polygoni Avicularis Herba, knotgrass), Qú mài (瞿麦 Dianthi Herba, dianthus), Bái máo gēn (白茅根 Imperatae Rhizoma, imperata [rhizome]), and Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]).
