Rationale: Lián ròu clears heart fire and promotes interaction between the heart and kidney. Mài dōng, combined with it, clears heart and nourishes yīn. Dì gǔ pí and Huáng qín supplement yīn and abate vacuity heat. Chē qián zǐ and Fú líng clear heat and disinhibit water, conducting the heart fire out with the urine. Tài zǐ shēn―or Rén shēn―, Huáng qí, and Gān cǎo supplement lung qì and engender lung liquid, thus addressing the damage to lung metal by heart fire flaming upward. This formula thus tends both the root and tip. By clearing heart fire and quieting the spirit, restoring heart-kidney interaction, and disinhibiting damp-heat, it therefore addresses both the vacuity and repletion aspects of the condition.
