GB-19 Brain Hollow

脑空 〔腦空〕nǎo kōng

Alternate names: 颞 niè rú, Temple Region

Channel: GB, Foot Lesser Yáng (shào yáng) Gallbladder Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the back of the head, in a sizable depression lateral to the external occipital protuberance (eop), directly above GB-20 (fēng chí).

Classic location: One cùn and five fēn behind Spirit Support (GB-18), in the depression on either side beneath the occipital bone. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: See GB-18.

Action: Clears the gallbladder and drains fire; soothes the sinews and quickens the network vessels; rouses the brain and frees the orifices.

Modern indications: Headache; dizzy vision; mania and withdrawal; epilepsy; painful stiffness of the neck and nape.

Classic indications: Wind dizziness; heart palpitation; stiff nape; manic disease.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn downward transverse insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 5‒15 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the gallbladder channel and yáng linking vessel (yáng wéi mài).
