Chinese Angelica, Gentian, and Aloe Pill
当归龙荟丸 〔當歸龍薈丸〕dāng guī lóng huì wán

Ingredients:
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 30g
- Lóng dǎn (龙胆 Gentianae Radix, gentian [root]) 15g
- Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 30g
- Huáng lián (黄连 Coptidis Rhizoma, coptis [root]) 30g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 30g
- Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) 30g
- Lú huì (芦荟 Aloe , aloe) 15g
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) 15g
- Mù xiāng (木香 Aucklandiae Radix, costusroot) 5g
- Shè xiāng (麝香 Moschus , musk) 1.5g or Qīng dài (青黛 Indigo Naturalis , indigo) (water–ground) 15g
Action: Drains liver fire and frees the stool.
Indication: Liver-gallbladder repletion fire manifesting in dizziness, fright palpitation, tugging and slackening, mania, constipation, reddish urine, and high blood pressure.

Method: Grind to a fine powder, blend with honey, and form into 100 mg pills.
Dosage: 20 pills 1–2 times a day.
Rationale: Qīng dài, Lú huì, and Huáng lián are cold bitter agents. With Lóng dǎn, which drains specifically liver fire, these four agents together to eliminate the repletion fire, and the wind and dryness that result from it. Huáng qín drains lung fire; Huáng bǎi drains kidney fire; Dà huáng drains stomach fire; and Zhī zǐ drains triple burner heat. Dāng guī nourishes the blood. Mù xiāng and Shè xiāng are aromatic mobile and penetrating agents that prevent the cold agents from causing stagnation.
