Rationale: Dāng guī, Shú dì huáng, and Rén shēn nourish liver blood and quiet the spirit, thus focusing mainly on the root of the disorder. Zhēn zhū mǔ, Xī jiǎo, Fú shén, and Lóng gǔ calm the liver and subdues yáng, as well as quiets the spirit and calms heart palpitation; it therefore treats the roots of the disorder. Bǎi zǐ rén nourishes the heart and quiets the spirit; Suān zǎo rén pit nourishes the liver and quiets the spirit; and Zhū shā settles the heart and quiets the spirit. These three agents combined with Xī jiǎo and Dāng guī nourish liver yīn and clear heart fire. Chén xiāng, heavy in substance and downbearing in action, works with the Zhēn zhū mǔ to combat the floating yáng.
