Wind-heat throat impediment

风热喉痹 〔風熱喉痹〕 fēng rè hóu bì

Throat impediment (a sore swollen throat with a feeling of blockage and difficulty swallowing) attributed to externally contracted wind-heat. Accompanying signs include heat effusion, cough, hoarse voice, thin yellow tongue fur, and a rapid floating pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Dispel wind, clear heat, and disinhibit the throat with Lonicera and Forsythia Powder (银翘散 yín qiào sǎn) plus isatis root (Isatidis Radix, 板蓝根 bǎn lán gēn), belamcanda (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 射干 shè gān), and scrophularia (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参 xuán shēn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on LU and LI. Prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed; select LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), PC-7 (Great Mound, 大陵 dà líng), and ST-43 (Sunken Valley, 陷谷 xiàn gǔ), needling with drainage. For pronounced soreness, add SI-17 (Celestial Countenance, 天容 tiān róng) and CV-22 (Celestial Chimney, 天突 tiān tú).
