ST-43 Sunken Valley

陷谷 〔陷谷〕xiàn gǔ

Channel: ST, Foot Yáng Brightness (yáng míng) Stomach Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the dorsal aspect of the foot, in the space between the second and third metatarsal bones, slightly distal to their tarsometatarsal articulations.

Classic location: In the outer aspect of the space between the large and second toe, in the depression behind the base joint, two cùn up from Inner Court (ST-44). (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: The dorsal venous network of the foot. The medial dorsal cutaneous nerve of the foot.

Action: Fortifies the spleen and disinhibits dampness; harmonizes the stomach and downbears counterflow.

Modern indications: Puffy swelling of the face; painful red swollen eyes; rumbling intestines and abdominal pain; painful swelling of the dorsum of the foot.

Classic indications: Red eyes and face; drum distension (gǔ zhàng); night sweating; heat effusion; persistent cough and counterflow.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 2‒7 min.

Point groups: Stream (shù) (wood) point.
