Throat impediment

喉痹 〔喉痹〕hóu bì

1. A generic name for swelling and soreness of the throat. Throat impediment is attributed generally either to externally contracted wind-heat or to yīn vacuity.

Medicinal therapy: Wind-heat is treated with Lonicera and Forsythia Powder (银翘散 yín qiào sǎn) plus isatis root (Isatidis Radix, 板蓝根 bǎn lán gēn), belamcanda (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 射干 shè gān), and scrophularia (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参 xuán shēn), whereas yīn vacuity can be treated with Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill (六味地黄丸 liù wèi dì huáng wán).

Acumoxatherapy: For wind-heat, base treatment mainly on LU and LI. Select GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), TB-1 (Passage Hub, 关冲 guān chōng), and LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé); needle with drainage. Prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed. For yīn vacuity, base treatment mainly on KI and LU. Select KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), and LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì); needle with even supplementation and drainage. For dry throat, add TB-2 (Humor Gate, 液门 yè mén). For pronounced sore swollen throat, prick LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng) to bleed.

2. Critical swelling and soreness of the throat in which the throat becomes severely occluded.
