SI-17 Celestial Countenance

天容 〔天容〕tiān róng

Channel: SI, Hand Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Small Intestine Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lateral aspect of the neck, on the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid (scm) muscle, in the depression immediately posterior to the angle of the mandible.

Classic location: Below the ear, behind the corner of the jaw. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: Anteriorly, the external jugular vein; deeper, the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein. Superficially, the anterior branch of the great auricular nerve, the cervical branch of the facial nerve; deeper, the superior cervical ganglion of the sympathetic trunk.

Action: Soothes the sinews and quickens network vessels; clears heat and disperses swelling.

Modern indications: Deafness and tinnitus; painful swollen throat; painful swelling of the neck and nape.

Classic indications: Fullness in the chest hampering respiration; retching counterflow and ejection of foam; clenched jaw.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.8 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒10 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the small intestine and gallbladder channels.
