Phlegm constipation

痰秘 〔痰秘〕tán bì

Constipation attributed to damp phlegm obstructing the stomach and intestines. Phlegm constipation is associated with glomus and oppression in the chest and rib-side, panting and fullness, dizziness, sweating from the head, and rumbling intestines.

Medicinal therapy: Transform phlegm and free the bowels using formulas such as Two Matured Ingredients Decoction (二陈汤 èr chén tāng) plus unripe bitter orange (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 枳实 zhǐ shí), rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄 dà huáng), white mustard (Sinapis Alba Semen, 白芥子 bái jiè zǐ), and bamboo sap (Bambusae Succus, 竹沥 zhú lì). Severe cases can be treated with Drool-Controlling Elixir (控涎丹 kòng xián dān).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on alarm, back transport, and lower uniting points of LI, and on CV, ST, and SP. Select BL-25 (Large Intestine Transport, 大肠俞 dà cháng shù), ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), ST-37 (Upper Great Hollow, 上巨虚 shàng jù xū), TB-6 (Branch Ditch, 支沟 zhī gōu), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán); needle with drainage.

Point selection according to signs: For glomus and oppression in the chest and rib-side, add CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng) and PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān). For dizziness, add ST-8 (Head Corner, 头维 tóu wéi), and ST-41 (Ravine Divide, 解溪 jiě xī). For panting and fullness, Panting Stabilizer (定喘 dìng chuǎn), and CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng).
