From Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet (金匮要略 jīn guì yào lüè). A feeling of heat in the head. A hot head is usually attributable to yīn vacuity with upbearing fire, or liver wind or liver yáng harassing the upper bodyand is often associated with redness of the checks and baking heat [effusion] that can be palpated.
Medicinal therapy: Enrich yīn and downbear fire; calm the liver and subdue yáng. Use Gastrodia and Uncaria Beverage (天麻钩藤饮tiān má gōu téng yǐn) or Uncaria Powder (钩藤散gōu téng sǎn).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on back transport points, and points of the three yīn channels of the foot, HT, and GB. Main points: BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), and SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo); needle with supplementation.
For upbearing vacuity fire, prick HT-8 (Lesser Mansion, 少府 shào fǔ) and KI-1 (Gushing Spring, 湧泉 yǒng quán) to bleed.
For liver wind and liver yáng harassing the upper body, add GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), and GB-43 (Pinched Ravine, 侠溪 xiá xī); needle with drainage.
