Hot formula

热剂 〔熱劑〕 rè jì

One of the twelve formula types. Heat can eliminate cold; hence hot formulas treat cold patterns. For example, Counterflow Cold Decoction (四逆汤 sì nì tāng), which contains dried ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 干姜 gān jiāng), aconite (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, 附子 fù zǐ), and licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix, 甘草 gān cǎo), treats aversion to cold, counterflow cold of the limbs, curled-up lying posture, watery diarrhea containing untransformed food, absence of thirst, and a forceless deep fine pulse.
