Scourge-Clearing Toxin-Vanquishing Beverage

清瘟败毒饮 〔清瘟敗毒飲〕 qīng wēn bài dú yǐn

Ingredients

Actions: Clears heat and resolves toxin; cools the blood and nourishes yīn.

Indications: Seasonal scourge epidemic (shí xíng wēn yì) with exuberant heat toxin blazing in both qì and blood aspects, characterized by high fever, vexation and agitation, and in severe cases clouding mania and delirious speech, thirst with desire for fluid, splitting headache, red or purple macular eruption, vomiting of blood (blood ejection), nosebleed (nǜ xuè), and parched lips. Tongue: Red. Pulse: Rapid. Contraindicated in the absence of exuberant heat toxin.

Method: First four ingredients may be varied considerably to adjust the strength of the formula.

Rationale: This formula is a variant of a combination of Bái hǔ tāng (白虎汤 White Tiger Decoction), huanglianjiedutang, and Xī jiǎo dì huáng tāng (犀角地黄汤 Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). Shí gāo, Zhī mǔ, Gān cǎo, and zhuye[1] are a variation of Bái hǔ tāng (白虎汤 White Tiger Decoction). They clear repletion heat in the qì aspect. Huáng lián, Zhī zǐ, Huáng qín, and Lián qiào are a variation of huanglianjiedutang. They drain fire and resolve toxin. Xī jiǎo, Shēng dì huáng, Mǔ dān pí, Chì sháo, and Xuán shēn a variation of Xī jiǎo dì huáng tāng (犀角地黄汤 Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). They cool the blood and restore yīn. The formula as a whole mainly clears heat and resolves toxin, and secondarily cools the blood and restores yīn.
