Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction

犀角地黄汤 〔犀角地黃湯〕xī jiǎo dì huáng tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Clears heat and resolves toxin; cools the blood and disperses stasis.

Indication: Heat entering provisioning-blood in warm heat disease with signs such as clouded spirit and delirious speech. Tongue: Red or crimson. Pulse: Fine and rapid. There may also be maculopapular eruption, vomiting of blood (blood ejection) or nosebleed (nǜ xuè) due to frenetic movement of hot blood. This formula also treats clove sore running yellow (dīng chuāng zǒu huáng).

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Xī jiǎo is cold and salty. It clears provisioning-blood heat, thereby calming the blood. Shēng dì huáng is cold and sweet. It clears provisioning and cools the blood, enriches yīn-humor, thereby extinguishing the fire. These are the sovereign agents. Bái sháo and Mǔ dān pí both cool and quicken the blood, thus treating the blood heat and any blood stasis that might attend it. Hóng huā may be added for bright red bloody stool and high fever with heart vexation. With the further addition of Táo rén and Líng xiāo huā, the formula can treat heat effusion and delirious speech at night during menstruation due to fire ablaze in the blood aspect with binding heat and static blood.

Variations: Severe papules or macules: Add Jīn yín huā (金银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]), Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]), and Huái huā (槐花 Sophorae Flos, sophora flower).
